How to teach languages online

I have been asked many times by people how they can become an online teacher. More and more people are seeing the benefits and the freedom of becoming a teacher. Think about it. You can work from anywhere in the world, you can set your own schedule and you can make some good money that will allow you to travel and experience the world and new cultures.

With that in mind, I have developed today's episode on how you can start to teach ANY language online. Of course my experience is teaching English, but as you will see, the skills I am teaching you can be applied to any language.

Advantages to teaching online

There are many advantages to teaching online over a more traditional format. For example, you will no longer be required to teach and base yourself in one place.

Secondly, you suddenly don't need to find clients locally. In fact, the whole world is now potentially your market. Think of all of those rich business professionals who need English or some other language and are willing to pay for an experienced native teacher.

Thirdly, you can live and work in some great countries with cheap costs of living. This means you can earn in dollars or euros and then spend more time on the beach relaxing.

Finally, you are able to start your own online business and become the entrepreneur that you have always secretly dreamed of becoming.

What you need to teach

This is a big question. It depends really. For example, you can start out with a pretty basic setup, your laptop and a decent internet connection.

However, if you want to provide more professional classes you are going to need to use software such as "Zoom", a HD quality webcam, digital writing board and a dual monitor setup.

Secondly, you will benefit from having some training as a teacher or experience explaining different aspects of grammar. It is very difficult to explain grammar if you have never had to explain grammar before.

Make sure you get your hands on good resources and books in digital format. You will also benefit from a library of PDFs.

Selling online courses

Delivering online courses with online video lessons is another great option. You will need an LMS or Learning Management System to host and deliver this content. The most common ones are either Moodle or a WordPress based solution.

You will also need to look at ways to lock content. There are many membership plugins that work with WordPress to only allow registered users or paying customers access to certain pages on your website. This is great if you are hosting your online course directly on your WordPress site.

Getting paid

This is one of the most important parts of the equation. How can you get your customer in another country to pay you. Well, for that we have PayPal which is the most popular solution. You can easily embed a "pay now" button on your website or send someone your "payme" link.

Some other solutions are "Stripe", which is quickly becoming the go to for most people. Stripe offers very competitive commissions on transactions and is fairly easily integrated with most WordPress websites and plugins.

Teaching Market Places

If you prefer to advertise on a site that already has a lot of traffic and potential customers then you can check out a market place. These sites typically allow you to register, create a profile and advertise your classes. They will of course take a cut of your hourly rate and they are also very competitive with lots of other teachers trying to capture clients.

Some of the most popular ones are VipKid and iTalki. You can register with them and start in no time.

The complete setup

You may be asking yourself, wow, that seems like a lot of things to consider. If you are interested in focusing on getting clients and getting paid then you may wish to consider having someone setup all the tech stuff for you, so that you can focus on generating content.

Lucky for you I have teamed up with my tech guys who are able to offer packages that can get you started in no time.
